Information - Leadership Initiative

A primary goal of the USA Section International College of Dentists is the recognition and promotion of Leadership in members of the dental profession. Dental leaders manifest their talent through service to fellow dentists, to members of their civic and religious communities, and even to all of mankind.

With this objective in mind, the Executive Board recommended the formation of an Ad Hoc Leadership Initiative Committee at its meeting in Baltimore on January 17, 2004, and the Board of Regents approved the recommendation on July 14, 2004 in Salt Lake City. President-Elect Leon Aronson chairs the Committee. The other members are Editor Richard Galeone and Regents Gerrit Hagman, Ted Roberson and Steven Tonelli.

After formation of the Committee, several weeks were devoted to collecting ideas and goals from committee members and others. Some of the responses to the question, What is Leadership? were as follows:

  1. The quality in a person that inspires other people to listen and follow.
  2. The ability to instill confidence and purpose in others.
  3. The ability to provide direction and focus for an individual, group or organization.
  4. The setting of a caring, visionary and thoughtful direction for an individual, group or organization.

  2. A Journalism Award has been established to recognize the best article or editorial written in the dental literature on the topic of Leadership.
  3. Leadership was the topic of the inspiring Convocation Address offered by Dean Jack W. Clinton of the OSHU School of Dentistry to the ICD Fellows inducted on October 1, 2004. To view the text click here
  4. The establishment of this Leadership Page on the ICD Web site to keep members current regarding the Leadership Committee's activities.
  5. The White Coat Ceremony message of Leadership and Professionalism was presented at Georgia, Alabama and Pittsburgh Schools of Dentistry during the past year by Regent Gerrit C. Hagman, District 5. To view the text click here
  6. Senior Dental Student LEADERSHIP Award This award recognizes the senior student who has shown outstanding Leadership and academic and professional improvement during the years as a student of dentistry; and has great potential to continue to do so. Chosen by their faculty, the student is given a plaque from the U.S.A. Section. This  award is given at each U.S. dental school.

Future Leadership Goals

  1. Criteria are being developed for a new Student Leadership Award which will be presented in every U.S. dental school.
  2. The White Coat Ceremony message of Leadership and Professionalism will be offered at more dental schools each year.
  3. There will be consistent updates about the Leadership Initiative process on this Web page.
  4. The winning article or editorial of the Journalism Award on Leadership will be reprinted in the KEY each year starting in 2006.
  5. The Leadership Committee will continue to ask for your ideas to help make this Initiative as successful as possible.

These are exciting times for the International College of Dentists. Leaders help their fellow dentists, civic and religious colleagues, and the entire world community. If you have ideas on how we might improve this initiative, please share them with us.

Recommended Reading on Leadership

Good leadership motivates and guides people to accomplish desired goals or objectives. Good leaders are creative, communicate well and are self confident. They are decision makers and have the ability to inspire, influence and motivate others. While there are many leadership styles, three are well known. They a laissez-faire, autocratic and democratic.

The laissez-faire leadership style is hands off and offers little or no direction. Individuals are given more freedom in their decision making and in setting their goals. They resolve their problems with little input from the leader.

The autocratic leadership style is more hands on where the leader keeps all of the decision making power, sets the goals and resolves the problems.

The democratic style of leadership encourages participation and is a team effort in the decision making process.

There are volumes of reading material on leadership. We have listed a few and, other than alphabetically, in no particular order. We encourage everyone to submit books on leadership to the Central Office to be added to this beginning list.
