District 1 News: The District News

Winter 2007

Regent’s Letter

M. Christine Benoit, D.M.D.
District One Regent

I have long admired the commitment and dedication of all fellows of the International College of Dentists and I welcome the opportunity to serve as the 2006-2010 Regent for District One. As cited by essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” Our College exemplifies that sentiment; the ICD is great because of you and your enthusiasm. Leadership is the North Star of the ICD. Fellows, individually and collectively, strive to promote, develop, and recognize leadership. Making a difference through leadership activities is the heartbeat of ICD and the pulse is visible here in our six New England states, in the USA, and throughout the world.

For your information, an overview of recent ICD initiatives is as follows:

Support of Peace Corps Applicants: This collaborative project of the ICD and Peace Corps seeks to provide no cost examinations and radiographs for Peace Corps applicants who are without a dentist. Consistent with the global missions of both organizations, this is an exciting opportunity to enhance ICD fellowship. Surveys indicate support will be overwhelming. Kudos to past Regent Steven Tonelli for sparking this idea.
Humanitarian Outreach Program: The Humanitarian Outreach Program continues in Laos this year. Future initiatives look to Africa, and more specifically, in Tanzania. Connecticut’s past Deputy Regent Howard Bailit serves on the committee that develops ICD’s public health initiative. Also in 2006, the Kikuyu Dental Clinic in Kenya received ICD funds totaling $15,000 to purchase sterilization equipment. Your generous contributions fuel ICD successes.
Outstanding Dental Leader Award: Dr. Eric Hovland, Dean of the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, was recognized as this year’s Outstanding Dental Leader. The ICD’s $25,000 contribution on October 16th, 2006 will help support efforts to rebuild the dental school in New Orleans.
New ICD Fellows: District One welcomed fourteen new fellows at a spectacular convocation in Las Vegas. Keynote speaker, Dr. Arthur Dugoni, inspired all who attended. To assure a robust future for the ICD, make a New Year resolution to consider sponsoring someone with significant and meritorious contributions to the profession, education, community or church.
Prenatal Oral Health Project: To highlight the importance of oral health care during the prenatal period, District One launched an oral health promotion project targeting pregnant teens in December. Two hundred and fifty rotary toothbrushes, educational brochures, floss and toothpaste kits were distributed to prenatal clinics by Dr. David Averill (VT), Dr. Bethaney Brenner (CT), Dr. Roland Bryan and LeAnn Haney (NH), Dr. Francis Connor (RI), Dr. Anthony Giamberardino (MA), Dr. Steve Tonelli (MA), Dr. Daniel Kane (RI), Dr. Frank Connor (RI), Dr. Shirley Spater (RI), Dr. Lisa Howard (ME) and Dr. Joseph Kenneally (ME). A generous sponsorship by Proctor & Gamble’s Mr. Glenn J. Frishman allowed District One to distribute additional oral heath kits for the young women. Response from staff at participating prenatal clinics has been most positive.
Dental Student Acknowledgments: In October, District One sent congratulatory letters to the Class of 2007 dental students at Boston University, Harvard University, Tufts University and the University of Connecticut. The communication provided an overview of the ICD and promoted fellowship opportunities. The College presents an annual Dental Student Leadership Award at each dental school. Our District will provide monetary awards to four seniors who demonstrate leadership qualities. Thank you, Deans Frankl, Robinson, Donoff, and Norris for your assistance and support of this endeavor.
District One Evening of Fellowship: With terrific District One support, an Evening of Fellowship was convened on November 16, 2006 and attracted thirty participants. Fellow Jim Jackson (SC) and Mr. Al Mason discussed relevant financial advice. The fellows renewed friendships and had an enjoyable evening. Thank you to planners Drs. Vangel Zissi, Steven Tonelli, and Anthony Giamberardino, and all the participants who made the event successful.
Annual ICD Lunch: You are invited to attend the annual lunch on Friday, January 26th from Noon to 2:00 PM. Friendship and camaraderie develop; new fellows are introduced. The District One Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Dr. Minoru Horiuchi. Japanese Consul General Suzuki and Dr. Domenic DePaola of the Forsythe Institute will join us in honoring “Min.” Other notable invited guests include ICD USA Section President James Felix, Secretary General Robert Brady, and ADA President Kathleen Roth. Please join us for this memorable occasion.

Each District is distinct and is comprised of fellows who display significant energy and talent. I urge you to read the Deputy Regent reports included later in this newsletter. I also would like to acknowledge all fellows, deputy regents, editors, counselors, leadership coordinators, sponsors, and contributors for the countless, invisible hours that they devote to advancing ICD’s mission and leadership.

Dr. Steven Tonelli deserves applause for four years of inspiring leadership as District One Regent.

Let us welcome 2007, a new year full of things that have never been. Wishing you good health, good news, and good times.

Component Notes

Connecticut - BETHANEY BRENNER has taken over the position of Deputy Regent from HOWARD BAILIT, who is staying on as Counselor. Howard presided over the CT ICD Annual luncheon at Mohegan Sun in May. The luncheon honored retiring CSDA Executive Director Noel Bishop, who served in this capacity for 17 years. Howard is presently working on having UConn dental students participate in the ICD Student Exchange Program. Under this program, two UConn students would spend two weeks at a dental school in another country, while two students from that country would be spending two weeks at UConn. It provides both groups of students the opportunity to experience dental education and delivery systems in other countries.

Maine - The Maine Dental Association boasts four Fellows among its officers; Secretary KARL WOODS, Treasurer ANSLEY SAWYER, Vice President JAMES SCHMIDT and President LISA HOWARD, who is the MDA’s first woman dentist to assume the Presidency. The Maine Board of Dental Examiners has a number of fellows as members, including President JERROLD COHEN, Complaint Officer DENISE THERIAULT, and new member DAVID MOYER. The Maine ICD component honored outgoing MDA President Moe Convey and Dr. Howard with the gift of books on leadership at the annual luncheon at the Samoset Resort. The component is involved in helping the MDA with several mentoring programs for prospective dentists in the state. Maine was also able to provide toothbrushes and dental care kits to pregnant teens at Southern Maine Medical Center’s pre-natal clinic in Biddeford.

Massachusetts - Several Fellows hold leadership roles in the Massachusetts Dental Society. The current president is ALAN GOLD, President Elect is ANDREA RICHMAN. Andrea will be the first woman dentist to serve as President of the MDS. MILT GLICKSMAN is the Vice President, TOM TORRISI is the Secretary, CHARLES GAGNE is Treasurer, and DAVID SCHMID is Assistant Treasurer. ROBERT FAIELLA was elected to serve as the next Trustee of the First District of the ADA. Our sincere congratulations and warmest thanks go out to STEVE TONELLI, who completed his 4 year term as ICD Regent for District One. In his last year as Regent, Steve set up a mentoring program for Tufts undergraduates interested in dentistry, and organized a project to provide electric toothbrushes and dental care kits to young low-income expectant mothers in New England. Steve has been elected to serve as a Councilman of the College at Large, as has VAN ZISSI. These two, with Maine’s JOE KENNEALLY, give our District three representatives on the 34 seat International Council.

New Hampshire - NH ICD’s 5th Annual Dinner was held at C.R. Sparks in Bedford on Sept. 14th. 65% of the Fellows attended to hear Mr. Mark Gonthier, Associate Admissions Dean of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine speak about the school’s admissions process. Next year’s dinner, Sept. 6th at C.R. Sparks, will feature dentist/attorney Dr. Bradley Stolzer. For more information, contact Deputy Regent ROLAND BRYAN. NH’s mentoring program at UNH under the guidance of James Pollard is expecting another exciting program as it enters its 5th year. Leanne Haney is assisting in the distribution of electric toothbrushes and educational dental care kits for low-income teenage mothers-to-be, as part of the District-wide project.

Rhode Island - CHRISTINE BENOIT became the Regent for District One following the Annual Meeting of the ICD in Las Vegas. RAY GEORGE, SR. was elected Secretary-Treasurer of the American Association of Orthodontists at their annual meeting this spring. NICK BARONE is the President of the RI affiliate of Donated Dental Services. RI DDS is approaching the $3 million mark in donated treatment since the inception of the program. RIDA’s officer corps includes RICK WALSH, Immediate Past President, CRAIG VAN DONGEN, President, ROGER TURKEL, President-Elect, and Deputy Regent FRANK CONNOR, Secretary-Treasurer.

Vermont - This fall District One began a program to deliver oral health care information and materials for expectant teens. Vermont was able to provide Oral B rotary tooth brushes, supplies and dental health information packets to the Lund Family Center. The Lund Family Center is Vermont’s only residential treatment center for pregnant teens. For over 115 years the Lund Center has had a positive impact on the lives of families. The Lund Center was most appreciative of the gift and our concern for the dental health of the teens.

In Memory of
Deceased Fellows

District One wishes to express condolences over the loss of four of our Fellows since our last printing.

They are: Dr. Paul Lustig and Dr. Herbert Schilder of the MA Component, Dr. Charles Lambrukos of the NH Component, and Dr. Albert DiPrete of the RI Component.

All will be sadly missed.
