District 9: Newsletter of the Michigan Constituency of ICDMarch 2007, vol. 1, #1

|||||||||||||||||
Regent Michael A. Luberto District 9 ReportDr. David Spiegelman, a Peace Corps Dental Consultant, asked the Board if ICD Fellows could be requested to volunteer their services to provide dental x-rays and exams on a prospective Peace Corps volunteer, at no fee, to those individuals being shipped around the world. The Projects Committee voted that they will provide $5000 out of the Projects Committee’s budget to support the Peace Corps project. Dr. Aronson was the lead person on this project and brought it to fruition. A one time $5000 grant was approved to help support an ADA speaker at the 2007 ADA meeting. The ICD USA Section will sponsor this with the stipulation that the topic will be directed towards leadership, and the Committee will have control over who the speaker is.. Dr. Richard Shaffer, former Registrar of the USA Section was made Registrar Emeritus of the USA Section. A bylaws change to be noted is as follows: “Motion to amend the Bylaws of the International College of Dentists with regard to Terms of Office in Article X and Article XI [delete] “January 1 of each year” and [add] “12:01 a.m. on the morning after the Annual Dinner Dance.” Proposed by the Bylaws Committee. Motion passed. District Nine was very active at the meeting. It was also nice to see Dr. Kathleen Roth, ADA President from Wisconsin at our meeting along with husband Dr. Daniel Roth, Vice Regent of District Nine. |
Treatment area damage at Louisiana State University from hurricane Katrina |

Please reserve the date July 19th, and 20th for the Foundation CEC in Atlanta, Georgia. Literature will be forth coming. I wore many hats at the meeting. Besides attending committee meetings and the Regents’ Board meeting, I stepped into the position of President of the ICD USA Section Foundation, due to the unexpected death of Dr. John Lathrop, Past President of the USA Section and President of the Foundation. We also lost another Trustee of the Foundation and Past President of the USA Section, Dr. Donald Compaan. They both will be missed. I was honored by officially being elected President of the Foundation by the Board of Trustees. I had to replace Dr. Lathrop as MC of the Fellowship Orientation Program the evening before the Convocation Ceremonies. At the dinner banquet, I presented the Dean of LSU School of Dentistry a check for $25,000 from the Foundation. The money is to be used to help defray some of the cost of the damages to the school by hurricane Katrina. Please inform your District Deputy of any potential candidates with leadership qualities whom you feel should be honored by being offered Fellowship in the International College of Dentistry. In Fellowship, Michael A. Luberto. D.D.S. |

Past Year Presentations for ICDThe past year has had much activity for the Michigan section of the ICD. In May the Michigan Dental Association celebrated it's150 birthday, and ICD was part of the celebration. A packed house at the Radisson Hotel witnessed the gala event on May 19, 2006, hosted by MDA President and ICD Fellow Josef Kolling
On behalf of the officers and fellows of the Michigan Constituency of District 9 USA Section, Dr. Luberto presented a large framed signed print of the USS North American at Lake Charlevoix by Michigan marine artist Jim Clary to the MDA. Hopefully it will hang in one of the offices or halls of the MDA for another 150 years
A highlight of the festivities was a presentation of a plaque honoring the MDA from the ICDUSA section by Dr. Leon Aronson, USA Section president.
MDA president Kolling happily accepted the plaque on behalf of the Michigan Dental Association.
Gerri Cherney Retires from MDAGerri Cherney, longtime executive director of the Michigan Dantal Association and Fellow of the International College is sadly leaving the directorship of the organization.
Beginning with the MDA in 1958 under the tutelage of Dr. John Nolan, Gerri grew with the MDA and became so deeply involved with it, that she frequently referred to the MDA and its members as her professional family.
I first became acquainted with her in the early 1970’s at which time she was responsible for the MDA annual session. She taught the entire committee just how to “do it” with humor and fun.
She never has lost that sense of humor and connection to the dental association, and her knowledge and abilities have generated kudos from the ADA and leaders in government.
Gerri has served the Michigan Dental Association as its director since 1990, but is now retiring.
She has always said that she wanted to retire one year before anyone else even thought of wanting her to. By my estimations, she still has at least 20 years to go.
Gerri, we will miss you but we look forward to watching you on your next career challenges, for we all know that you’ll never be able to sit still.
Dr. Jane Grover ElectedOur heartiest congratulations to ICD fellow Jane Grover upon her election to the position of ADA 2nd vice president this past October at the annual ADA meeting in Las Vegas. We know she will serve the ADA with the same enthusiasm and skills that she has exhibited within the MDA .
Jane’s practice is in Jackson,MI where she is the dental director for the Center for Family Health.
What follows is a letter from Dr. Owens to Dr. H. Robert Steiman, dean University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry
Dear Dr. Steiman,
Enclosed is a check for $500.00 from the Michigan Constituent of the International College of Dentists to help defray the costs of the white coat ceremony. The USA Section of ICD is dedicated to fostering the development of leadership in our profession. We believe this begins early in the training of our profession.
The white coat ceremony epitomizes the initiation of the student to the clinical aspects of our fine profession. We are dedicated to encouraging leadership even in this early phase of education.
Quite frankly, we are interested in participating in an active manner in this ceremony. Additionally, as part of our commitment to dental education, we have allocated a $500.00 award to the student winner of the ICD leadership award. We will coordinate the award with your office.
We are looking forward to a continuation of the excellent relationship between the College and UDM’s dental school.
Sincerely,
Charles E. Owens, DDS
Deputy Regent
At the end of the 2006 legislative year, Governor Granholm signed legislation allowing retired dentists to obtain a special license for treating underserved populations.
Introduced as House Bill 6392, an individual who is retired from the active practice of medicine, osteopathic medicine and surgery, podiatric medicine and surgery, or dentistry and who wishes to donate his or her expertise for the medical or dental care and treatment of indigent and needy individuals may obtain a free special volunteer license.
Michigan has many areas that are designated as dentally underserved in both rural communities and in the intercity. With passage of this legislation access to dental care will be greatly expanded. Retired dentists can obtain a volunteer license and volunteer their time to those who have the greatest need.
The dentist must have been previously licensed to engage in the practice of dentistry in the State of Michigan and the license was in good standing prior to the expiration. When applying for the volunteer license, the dentist must also acknowledge and document that he or she will not receive any payment or compensation, either direct or indirect, for the dental care services they provide under the license.
If the dentist has been out of practice (or the license expired) for 3 or more years, the dentist must provide documentation that during the three years immediately prior to the application, he or she has obtained at least 2/3 of the continuing education requirements. Once the license is granted the dentist must complete the required amount of continuing education (60 hours in 3 years) to maintain licensure. There is no fee for the issuance or renewal of a volunteer license. Additionally, this law provides immunity for the dentist with a volunteer license; they will not need to purchase a professional liability policy.
The special volunteer license application form can be obtained from the Department of Community Health, Consumer and Industry Services, Bureau of Health Professions 517-335-0918.
