Tri County Clinic Still A Shining Star
By Dr. Tim Brown
The Mission of the Tri-County Community Dental Clinic is to provide high quality oral health care services in a caring and compassionate manner to those individuals in Calumet, Outagamie and Winnebago counties whose access to dental health care is limited due to inadequate income or a reduced access to Medicaid/Badger Care.
TCCDC is staffed by volunteer dentists, hygienists and assistants as well as a paid staff including an Executive Director, dental assistants and front desk personnel. Marquette University dental students and Fox Valley Technical School hygiene and dental assistant students also help provide services to patients.
Since opening it’s doors on Oct. 22nd, 2003, through May 2006, TCCDC volunteers and students have provided $3,091,000 in donated dental services on 14,962 patient visits! In the first 5 months of 2006, the clinic has averaged over $140,000/month in donated care! Our founding steering committee of dentists never dreamed we could or would donate this dollar amount to the less fortunate in the tri county region and treat so many patients in such a short period of time. Despite our increase in the total number of volunteer hours at the clinic, we are only scratching the surface in full filling the enormous need for basic dental treatment in our area.
Approximately 60% of our patients are on Medicaid/Badger Care and 40% are considered low income and not eligible for Medicaid. Even though all of our dentists and hygienists are volunteers and we have no mortgage, we still require additional funding via grants and donations to meet our budget. The Board of Directors appreciate all donations and feel the clinic is providing an excellent return on donated dollars.
We deeply appreciate the generosity of ICD members who have contributed in the past and look forward to their continued support. We are also always in need of additional dental volunteers at TCCDC. If interested, please call our Executive Director, Barb Uehling, at 920-882-9989. Thank you again.
It’s Not Just Bricks and Mortar
Thanks to the generous contributions of our ICD members, we raised $965 for the Tri-County Dental Clinic last year. This program is in its third year and as you will recall it is simple in design, is voluntary for our members and yet provides the WISCONSIN ICD an avenue to participate in dentistry’s mission to help others right here in our state. Services provided include emergency care, routine cleanings, exams and basic fillings. As you are aware, even though the dentists donate their time, the clinic runs a deficit and relies on contributions. Please know that 100% of your donation is used to help our needy citizens.
To all of you who contributed last year, a sincere Thank You for making this program a success. A special THANK YOU goes to those who were especially generous. The following chart illustrates the breakdown of the contributions of our ICD members. 2005 contributions totaled $1,040. Let’s see if we can do better in 2006.

ICD Loses a Friend
Dr. August J. Bentz passed away on July 14, 2006 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He was inducted in 1973 in Houston, TX and was extremely proud of his ICD Fellowship. He spoke of his induction ceremony quite frequently. Before Dr. Bentz became totally incapacitated, he requested of his wife and son to be buried with his ICD pin on his lapel. His wish was fulfilled. Thank you, Dr. Bentz for your many years of service.
Dr. David Sampe Award Most Improved Dental Student
This award was initiated in 1995 by Dr. David Sampe, and was named in his honor two years ago. It’s given annually at the International College of Dentists dinner In association with the WDA Jewel of the Great Lakes Annual Session. The student is evaluated on his/her increase in GPA (50%) from Freshman to Junior year, as well as Class Rank (25%), Overall Grade Point (15%) and a student interview (10%). The recipient is chosen by the ICD from several qualified student candidates that Marquette’s Office of Student Services provides. The 2006 Award winner Zachary McCallum was the 12th recipient of the award which consists of a Plaque and Scholarship money that he may use as he pleases.
