Continuing Education Conference Scheduled for Atlanta

Mark your calendar now for the ICD’s 2007 Continuing Education Conference on July 18-20 in Atlanta, Georgia.

This year the meeting will begin with a reception at 6 pm on Wednesday the 18th. Lectures will be held in the mornings of July 19 and 20. Topics include Financial Planning, Oral Pathology, Restorative Concepts, the Digital Office and the Digital Home. As always, there is no tuition for ICD Fellows.

Atlanta is a city loaded with attractions, entertainment and interesting dining. It makes an outstanding venue for this year’s meeting and a family vacation. In addition to the outstanding public attractions in the city, the Spouses Program includes a visit to two of Atlanta’s most interesting homes by two of Atlanta’s top interior designers. Lunch at one of the most scenic settings in America will follow. There will be a modest fee for the spouses program, and reservations must be accepted on a “first come” basis.

More information will be sent to ICD Fellows within the next few months.

A First Greeting

By Donna B. Hurowitz, DDS, Editor

As a newcomer to the International College of Dentists, a 2005 Fellow, I was surprised but pleased when our District XIII Regent, Neil Loveridge, asked me to be editor. I will need your indulgence as I am still on the learning curve about this august organization. Your previous editor, Stephen Yuen, has given me some basics on the office, so here goes …

One of the high points of my 2006 year for reading was The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman. The interconnectedness of individual human beings, many of whom can now deal directly with each other despite physical separation of great distances, made possible by technology and scientific progress, is truly amazing.

But Friedman also pints out that many business services do and always will require mostly face-to-face dealings and delivery systems. Dentistry is one of those professions. Nevertheless, we are greatly affected by a smaller world and rapid communication.

My first foray into a totally international group was attendance at a Federation Dentaire Internationale meeting in Sydney in 2003. Continuing education lectures were often delivered in multiple languages. I compared delivery systems and social structures with dentists from England, Canada, Malaysia, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, and Japan. Like FDI, the International College of Dentists works to encourage exchange of goodwill among dentists throughout the world.

More later on the commonalities of dentists all over the world. It is an honor to be a Fellow of such a fine organization. I look forward to being your editor and encourage your ideas and comments. I would especially welcome suggestions for a new name or format for our newsletter.

ICD Assists Peace Corps Applicants

A new project of the USA Section encourages ICD Fellows to assist Peace Corps applicants by offering free clinical examinations and a full mouth series of radiographs. The radiographs may consist of either a standard full mouth series or a Panorex x-ray with four bitewing x-rays. The applicant will provide the dental examination form. Any dental treatment needed to bring their mouth to a healthy state will be the responsibility of the applicant.

The Peace Corps receives approximately 6,000 applicants a year from all over the United States. Some of the applicants have their own dentist, but some do not. Most of those accepted will serve in locations where there is no access to dental care, Thus, a standard of dental health is required before an applicant is accepted.

According to ICD USA Section Intermediate Past President Leon Aronson, “This is an opportunity to make your ICD Fellowship more meaningful. Participants will be recognized in state newsletters as well as on the Peace Corps and ICD websites.”

An announcement asking for ICD volunteers was mailed out in November. If you did not receive one and wish to volunteer, please call the Central Office at (301) 738-9143 for information and an enrollment form.
