Dear Fellows,

It has been a very quick start to 2017 and the first five months have been filled with many activities and trips to regional meetings. In January, the ICD USA Section Executive Committee met in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The Committee developed an agenda for the Section that adheres to the 2016 Strategic Plan and continues to promote the ICD in a favorable light. It was the first opportunity that the Executive Committee had to work with Admiral Elaine Wagner, our new Registrar and Dr. Cliff Simmons, our new Editor. I was very impressed with both of them and they both brought new prospective to our discussions.
In January, I had the pleasure to attend the Yankee Dental Congress in Boston, Massachusetts and the Chicago Midwinter Meeting in February. The ICD Fellows that I met were gracious, excited about the Section and College and confirmed my belief that we all belong to the Preeminent Dental Honors College.
In May the Section held our Spring Meeting in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This venue was chosen to generate interest in the ICD in Puerto Rico and to have the opportunity to meet and interact with ICD Fellows from Puerto Rico. A joint ICD-ACD-PFA reception was held in honor of our Fellows from Puerto Rico, generously sponsored by Henry Schein®. It was interesting to listen to the passion that many of them have for the ICD and the ADA. An Ethics Course was also held at the University of Puerto Rico School of Dental Medicine led by Fellows Gerri Ferris (PFA) and Barry Langley (ACD) who planned and facilitated the course. I would like to thank our staff, Regent Julio Rodriguez, and new Fellow Edwin del Valle for assisting Drs. Ferris and Langley with logistical planning and moderating of the course.
The Section is continuing to investigate ways to communicate to our Fellows through the media stream that they desire and is also studying our IT systems and developing a long-term plan to keep the Section’s IT functioning efficiently in the future. Drs. Elaine Wagner and Michael Bydalek will be giving a presentation with IT recommendations at our BOR Meeting this Fall. The Section has launched a new ICD USA Section mobile App for iPhone and Android phones available for free download at the iTunes and Google Play stores. Key-Mail blasts, KeyNotes, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the annual “Key”, are methods of communicating with our Fellows about the USA Section. Please make sure your email address is current in the USA Section Office database.
We have 430 Candidates in the process at this time, which indicates we will have an outstanding class of New Fellows to welcome at our Convocation in Atlanta, Georgia. Thank you all for recruiting the “cream of the crop” leaders of our profession for Fellowship in the ICD. Please continue to monitor your Candidates for Fellowship application to make sure all letters are written and the Fellowship Application is complete. This can be easily accomplished by logging into the website and selecting “My Candidates”.

The schedule for this year’s meeting has been ‘pushed forward’ one day, to avoid interference with ADA Activities, and allow our Fellows to participate in the ADA House of Delegates. The Fellowship Orientation will be held on Wednesday, October 18th and the Convocation and Dinner Dance will be held on Thursday, October 19th. I am pleased to announce that the Keynote Speaker for the Convocation will be Dr. Rajesh Chandna, ICD Worldwide President. I am looking forward to a successful Annual Meeting and memorable Convocation in Atlanta, Georgia!
Integrity, Leadership, and Service
Yours in Fellowship,
Charles L. Smith, DDS
President, ICD USA Section
