The International Humanitarian Liaison (HLC) Volunteer Projects (New)

The Humanitarian Liaison Committee (HLC) has been hard at work this past year. In August, the HLC emailed a survey to our Fellows and more than fifty percent of the responses indicated an interest in hearing more about Volunteer Opportunities and attending a Seminar on Volunteering. With survey results in hand, the HLC set out to meet these goals with the following:

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: The HLC has been working with the ADA’s Shared Global Resources  staff to share volunteer opportunities with our ICD Fellows. Please use the link below to access the HLC Volunteer Projects webpage.

VOLUNTEER SEMINARS: Three seminars are scheduled for 2013. Please use link below to view upcoming dates and locations.

Leadership: Great Expectations Mentoring Professionalism

Discover a truly unique mentoring program, Great Expectations, conceived by the Dallas County Dental Society and the Texas Component of the International College under the leadership of Moody Alexander. There are two unique key features to this program that set it apart from past professional mentoring efforts. The first is the utilization of the naturally occurring peer influence between first year students and their upper classmates. As time progresses, this peer influence is transferred to volunteer faculty and practicing dentists. The second unique aspect is that it is an ongoing program rather than a one time event.

Fisher House Program

The ICD USA Section recently partnered with the Fisher House Foundation to start a program allowing volunteer Fellows to offer emergency and palliative -- relieve the pain -- dental care for the residents of the Fisher Houses across the United States.

The local ICD dentists will act as volunteers and provide emergency dental care at NO CHARGE to the Fisher House family.  As programs launch near a Fisher House, a listing of the volunteer dentists will be available in each house and that will include the type of service they provide, such as general dentist, oral surgeon, pediatric dentist or other specialty. The Fisher House family member will contact the local dentist and identify themselves as a Fisher House resident and will be scheduled for emergency care at their office. The family member will have a letter of referral from the house for introduction.

The program launched on February 3, 2012 at Tripler Army Medical Center in Hawaii.  To read more about the ceremony held in Hawaii and to view photos, click here.

We look forward to this program launching at more Fisher Houses in the near future.  To download Program Development Information and Forms, click here.

Humanitarian Outreach Program

Several years ago the USA Section of the International College of Dentists’ Board of Regents determined that we should become more involved with programs that provided dental humanitarian support on a global basis. After considering many ideas and concepts, a project was approved that supported the training of dentists in Vietnam for a Masters degree program in dental public health. This program was conceived and directed by Dave Sampe and Jim Felix in 2001 and 2002 with the support of then USA-ICD President Dick Shick.

International Student Exchange Project

This project was initiated in 1990 by ICD Past President Richard C. Rice to improve and increase international relations at the student level by providing a professional and cultural exchange between dental schools in the USA and in other countries. The objective is to experience and study dental education and dental delivery systems to better appreciate the dental culture internationally. The program provides an excellent opportunity for a USA junior dental student to travel and spend three weeks in a pre-selected foreign dental teaching facility. A student from the foreign dental school would then return the visit to the USA. This has been a very popular project. Additional opportunities are available.

International Clinicians Program

Academic interchange is the purpose of this project. The objective is to exchange scholarly lecturers to share professional knowledge between the USA and other countries. The host country supplies the cost of housing, meals, etc., while the clinician is there. Although in its 21st year this project is under-utilized and under-financed.

Outstanding Leaders In Dentistry

The International College of Dentists presents a VHS video taped series by Outstanding Leaders In Dentistry reviewing their accomplishments and presenting their views on the dental profession.

Clinicians, practitioners, researchers, and educators who have contributed significantly to the profession of dentistry are recognized in these videotapes. Important events in their lives provide human interest aspects with historical value. The videotapes include why they chose dentistry as a career, the factors that influenced the character and timing of their contributions, their views of dentistry's past and future from their own historical perspective.

Outstanding Leaders in Dentistry videotapes are intended for use by professional associations, dental schools, libraries, and those who have a personal interest in the profession of dentistry.

This historical record can complement dental school and continuing educational courses or be used as presentations at professional meetings. Some of the forty subjects interviewed are no longer with us. Tapes are available for purchase for schools, constituents, educational programs or presentations at professional meetings.

Peace Corps Fellows

These U.S.A. Section Fellows are making their Fellowship in the International College of Dentists more meaningful by volunteering to provide a dental examination and x-rays for Peace Corps applicants at no charge if called upon. The applicant will provide the dental examination form. Any dental treatment needed to bring their mouth to a healthy state will be the responsibility of the Peace Corps applicant.

Visiting Scholar Room

The newest USA Section project is the "Visiting Scholar's Room" located in The Samuel D. Harris National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore, Maryland. This room was established in the Library of the Museum through a gift of $100,000, and will be the repository of another project of the USA Section, the Audiovisual Series "Outstanding Leaders in Dentistry." The Museum opened in June 1996. Videotapes are available for viewing in the Room.
