Leadership Initiative
A primary goal of the USA Section International College of Dentists is the recognition and promotion of Leadership in members of the dental profession. Dental leaders manifest their talent through service to fellow dentists, to members of their civic and religious communities, and even to all of mankind.
With this objective in mind, the Executive Board recommended the formation of an Ad Hoc Leadership Initiative Committee at its meeting in Baltimore on January 17, 2004, and the Board of Regents approved the recommendation on July 14, 2004 in Salt Lake City. Then President-Elect Leon Aronson chaired the committee. The other members were Regent Ted Roberson, Editor Richard Galeone, Regent Gerrit Hagman, and Regent Steven Tonelli.
After formation of the Committee, several weeks were devoted to collecting ideas and goals from committee members and others. Some of the responses to the question, What is Leadership? were as follows:
- The quality in a person that inspires other people to listen and follow.
- The ability to instill confidence and purpose in others.
- The ability to provide direction and focus for an individual, group or organization.
- The setting of a caring, visionary and thoughtful direction for an individual, group or organization.
Leadership Activities
- The International College of Dentists/USA Section presented Dean Arthur A. Dugoni with the first Outstanding Leader in Dentistry Award on the occasion of the renaming of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in his honor. This prestigious award has since been presented to the following distinguished individuals: the late United States Representative Dr. Charles W. Norwood (2005), Dean Eric J. Hovland (2006), Dr. Martin H. Hobdell (2007), Dr. David A. Whiston (2008), and Dr. William A. Hunter (2009).
- A Journalism Award has been established to recognize the best article or editorial written in the dental literature on the topic of Leadership.
- White Coat Ceremony messages of leadership and professionalism are presented by fellows of the International College of Dentists at dental school ceremonies throughout the country. Please read more about this program by viewing this link click here
- The Senior Dental Student Leadership Award is presented in each dental school and recognizes the student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership and academic and professional improvement during his/her tenure as a student, and shows great potential for leadership throughout his/her career. The award winner is chosen by faculty members from within the student’s dental school and each winner is given a plaque from the International College of Dentists U.S.A. Section. Please see the names of our student award winners in this link Student Leadership Award, 2009 update
- ICD Leadership Coordinators have been identified for every state in order to develop and nurture leadership activities at the district and local levels. The chairman of the Leadership Committee coordinates this effort nationally, and the Central Office provides support for this program as well as for the entire Leadership Initiative.
- A Leadership Coordinator Manual has been developed to help in our efforts. Please view through this link Leadership Coordinator Manual (PDF 2.5 MB, 46 pages)
- The Great Expectations Mentoring Professionalism Program
Vision
Our vision is to help the dental student cope with the challenges associated with professional school and to further help the student make the transition into becoming a dental colleague with high professional standards.
Mission
Our mission is to facilitate that transition through mentoring by fellow students, faculty, and other dental professionals while promoting a strong sense of family within that group.
Initiatives
1. To create a forum in which underclass-mates can address issues and concerns unique to their experiences.
2. To create an environment in which selected junior and senior dental students can mentor underclass-mates.
3. To offer students an opportunity to develop collegial relationships with student peers, faculty and other dentists in a casual environment.
4. To create an environment that values and promotes professional standards that places the best interests of the patient, the public, and the profession before one’s self.
More information on the Great Expectations Mentoring Professionalism Program can be found in the Leadership Coordinator Manual (PDF 1.3 MB, 46 pages) or visit the following link, "The Packet", which is a compilation of articles from the Great Expectations Program.
Future Leadership Goals
- The White Coat Ceremony message of Leadership and Professionalism will be offered at more dental schools each year.
- There will be consistent updates about the Leadership Initiative process on this Web page.
- The winning article or editorial of the Journalism Award on Leadership will be reprinted in the KEY each year starting in 2006.
- The Leadership Committee will continue to ask for your ideas to help make this Initiative as successful as possible.
These are exciting times for the International College of Dentists. Leaders help their fellow dentists, civic and religious colleagues, and the entire world community. If you have ideas on how we might improve this initiative, please share them with us.
